Tracking Media Consumption

Tracking Media Consumption

9:30am  - 12pm
TV= 10 min
Social media= 50 min
School= 15 min
Music in background= 40 min
Total= 2 hrs

12pm- 4pm
Social media + TV= 120 min
Total= 1.5 hrs

4pm -10pm
Social media alone= 85 min
Music in background= 30 min
TV/movie + social media= 170 min
Total= 4.75 hrs

10pm- 1am
TV= 3 hrs
Total= 3 hrs

Overall (9:30am- 1am)
TV alone= 190 min (3.1 hrs)
Social media alone= 135 min (2.25 hrs)
TV+ social media= 290 min (4.83 hrs)
Music in background= 70 min (1.1 hrs)
School= 15 min (0.25 hrs)
Overall Total= 11.53 hrs

Out of the 15.5 hrs I was awake, 11.53 of those were spent consuming media. That's 74% of my day consisting of watching TV, scrolling through social media, and listening to music. I think the other 26% (3 hrs) was spent going into town to Canadian Tire with my dad (to be fair, I was also practicing driving, so that's at least a little productive.) Of course, I will allow myself a bit of leeway because of the current global situation, as there is little to do in Black Creek besides go for walks, which I've done quite a bit.
That being said, it is slightly concerning that 3/4 of my day were spent doing practically nothing. I found the majority of my time spent online/consuming media was scrolling through social media like Instagram and other similar platforms while at the same time watching a movie or TV show. I wasn't sure what my overall total wold be before I began tracking the amount of time online, but I was hoping it wouldn't be too bad, like maybe 4 hours at most. I was wrong. I think I based my original prediction on a regular day (get ready for school, go to school, get home, have dinner, go online, go to sleep), in which 4 hours might have been accurate, but seeing as things are a bit different nowadays I can see why my prediction was way off.
Now I must say I was quite disappointed to realize the amount of time spent in front of a screen, but at the same time I wasn't very surprised because a bad habit of mine is doing one task and then taking a "break" to go online, which then overlaps the time it took to do that task in the first place. For example, the time period with the least media consumption was 12pm- 4pm, as I was in town for most of that time. However, the time period after that (4pm- 10pm) consisted of the most time spent online. That could be because it had the most hours anyways, or it could be because generally I spend more time online before and after dinner, even in normal circumstances. It could also be because it was immediately after we got back from town that I went on social media/watched TV.
I found that there was a balance between consuming user created media and mainstream products, because I often did both at the same time. To explain what behaviours influenced my media usage, for example, in the morning, I will get up and eat breakfast while watching TV, then have a shower (with music), I will then go on social media for about an hour and check for school related updates; this reinforces the pattern of doing a task, then social media afterwards for a longer time. So overall, I currently think that especially with things in the world being what they are, consuming media takes up a huge portion of my time, time that could be spent being productive or sleeping at a regular time.

  1. From Common Sense Media's study

    https://www.commonsensemedia.org/sites/default/files/uploads/research/2019-census-8-to-18-full-report-updated.pdf

    Among teenagers, nearly two-thirds (62%) use more than four hours’ worth of screen media, including nearly three in 10 (29%) who use more than eight hours of screen media in a day. Total average media time, including non-screen media activities such as reading books and listening to music, is 9:49 for teens. Further...Among teens, where social media use is most common, half (50%) of all girls say they enjoy using social media “a lot” compared to about a third (32%) of boys. Seventy percent of teen girls say they use social media “every day,” compared to 56% of boys. Teen girls average an hour and a half (1:30) a day on social media, compared to 51 minutes a day among teen boys.
